Natural History Museum – Grade 1 Listed
Project
Earth Galleries
Value
£275K
Brief Scope
The Natural History Museum identified the Earth Galleries lobbies and lift cars and their immediate surroundings required improvement in the event of an emergency.
Emergency management reviews highlighted compartmentation issues and how the lifts exit directly within open unprotected museum spaces and corridors.
Safety requirements were proposed to support wheelchair users meeting the Equalities Act 2010 including persons with a disability, either as a visitor or staff to collect in a safe area to await rescue.
Our scope of works entailed demolition and strip out of existing services, structural steelwork, screening, roof work, replacement of ceilings and erecting new stud and fire rated glass partitions. Installation of new fire doors and frames and smoke curtains. Electrical services included data, lighting, power, access control, fire alarms, smoke detection and emergency voice communications. Decorations included all new painting, flooring and signage throughout.
Service runs were designed to make use of the existing voids to minimise any new penetrations and adaptions to the building fabric and structure.
